If you've already read the article I posted about the Marvel Mixable Mashable Heroes from Mr. Potato Head, then you know pretty much all you need to know about the Transformers versions other than the characters that are available so far in the Philippines, which are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Grimlock, and Starscream.
You'll also need to know that they're still a whole lot of fun, and great value for your money, especially for younger kids.
There are three single figures available at Php 249.75; Bumblebee, Grimlock, and a version of Optimus Prime with translucent armor parts. There are also two deluxe sets available locally with vehicle parts for the spud inside, as well as the robot costume. They're available at Php 449.75 and feature Starscream with his jet pieces and an opaque Optimus Prime with his truck get up.
Considering that these little 2" figures are such great fun, it's hard to imagine that they don't cost as much as the other toys using this particular intellectual property. A Legends Class toy from Hasbro would cost about twice as much as one of these guys and they're not as entertaining (granted, they've got more parts to produce, but I feel fun is better than complexity).
Personally, I like the deluxe Optimus Prime set the best and wish there was one for both Grimlock and Bumblebee as well. The extra costume just adds a ton of play value to the little figure, allowing you to change him from robot to truck, while still seeing the little potato spud underneath. You will need an extra spud if you want to display both modes side by side, since the deluxe sets only come with one potato.
Starscream is a little less fun, but only because I'm not a huge fan of the character. He comes with a little ride-able jet, tail section, and a canopy hat, as well as his feet, torso, and helmet. 'Bee and 'Lock only come with their helmets, torsos, and feet. Grimlock gets the shaft since he's not really in "robot" form, but rather in his Tyrannosaurus Rex mode, complete with puny arms.
If you're in the States, there's a special set with an Optimus Prime and a larger spud with Grimlock in a nicer Rex mode, but so far we haven't seen that one here yet. As soon as we do, I'm snatching one up.
If you get more than one, there's also the old school Mr. Potato Head gimmick where you can mix and match the parts you have from other figures to create something else. Like a simpler version of LEGO building sets without all the intense searching among the parts for that one piece that has mysteriously disappeared.
Admittedly, it's probably a lot more fun for 3-year olds, but I just consider it a novel extra feature of an already great toy.
Again, these probably aren't for everyone, but the relatively low price, the super-deformed aesthetic, and the huge, funny expressions on these little figures make them perfect for desktop display. I love having them on my desk to fool around with when I need a distraction.
I only hope that we'll see more of them soon. I desperately want an Ironhide and a few more Decepticons. Soundwave, Playskool! Soundwave!
