G.I. Joe Renegades: Firefly

Wow. It’s been a while since I bought a G.I. Joe.

I think the last set I bought was the Motorcycle Armor set, but I really haven’t been active since the Sigma 6 days. After the Pursuit of Cobra line died, I was pretty turned off by the switch back to the bright colors of the original Joe line. It was great for the purists, but I loved the re-imagining of the groups threads and gear.

Apparently, I missed out on a lot since then.

Dark Shadows

I learned about Dark Shadows rather late in the proceedings. It was already about to open in local cinemas when I read about the movie online, and that it was yet another collaboration between Mr. Depp and Mr. Burton, who have already worked together in seven films since 1990’s Edward Scissorhands. In fact, it’s almost not a Time Burton film unless Johnny Depp is in it. Remember Mars Attacks!? Neither do I.

Thor: The Mighty Avenger: Cosmic Armor Thor

Of all the Marvel Films movies, my favorite is still Thor. However, the toy line that was launched with it was hit or miss with me. We got some great figures, like the Battle Hammer Thor and Secret Strike Loki, but we also got some real clunkers like Shield Bash Marvel's Odin and Asgard Defender Heimdall. The line was also plagued with assortments that were full of re-colored figures.

I couldn’t have been stoked to see Marvel’s The Avengers. I might not be the biggest fan of the comics, but I’m a geek for anything to do with superheroes. Plus it was a Joss Whedon movie and he’s no stranger to comics. He wrote the Astonishing X-Men stories in the Astonishing X-Men Ombibus, which are some of my favorite. He was also the one responsible for bringing Firefly to life. Have you seen Serenity? Mal Reynolds would kick Tony Stark’s ass and steal a Quinjet to sell to the Alliance.

Damn it, Hasbro! More Transformers?

Like I said when I wrote about the upcoming Ninja Turtles line, the only toys I’m anticipating more right now than the new TMNT figures are the various Transformers that Hasbro has announced in the past few months. Included in those is a new Fall of Cybertron line to help out my War for Cybertron guys and a whole mess of new Transformers: Prime figures.

I mean just look at these bad boys! It’s stupid how awesome these things are!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Sadly, I’ve been reading that the recent Bandai Thundercats toyline based on the new cartoon series is dead in the water. They had a few more figures in the pipeline (including some awesome looking 6” figures), but it looks as if they may have canned them. I guess interest in these old 80’s properties among kids just isn’t as big as the big wigs think they are.

But I’m hoping that I’m wrong.

Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer hits number 1. The Fox Network debuts with Married… with Children. The Simpsons first show up as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. U2 makes it big with The Joshua Tree. The Iran-Contra hearings begin. Guns N’ Roses releases Appetite for Destruction. George Michael releases Faith. Kylie Minogue's cover of The Loco-Motion starts her career. A gallon of gas is only 89 cents. We had 1 billion less people in the world.

We also got Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street.

If there was a pantheon of geek gods, Joss Whedon would be right up there with the likes of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Jim Lee, Frank Miller, Guillermo Del Toro, and the Four Horsemen, tossing back goblets of wine and drunkenly hurling lightning bolts down upon the jocks and cheerleaders.
